A mock game level I created for my Environment Design course using Unreal Engine 5. This was my favorite course of the game development program, and it helped me realize that environment design is the direction I wish to go with my career. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience of blocking out levels, painting foliage, populating the world with assets, and collaborating with my peers on our projects. It was also my first time using Unreal Engine, so it was a challenging and enlightening process. I learned many concepts of designing environments, such as mood lighting, set dressing, tiling textures, player boundaries, and creating a world beyond. We utilized both custom assets and assets from the Epic marketplace. The assets I made are the stone pedestal in the center, the broken tree, the simple fence as a boundary, and small candle holders at the base of the four statues. Other assets came from Soul: Cave, Infinity Blade, and Ithris Cemetery asset packs from Epic. The purpose of this room is for the player to light a flame at the base of the four statues in order, which is given to them through a riddle at the base of the pedestal. Upon lighting the flames in the correct order, the gold claws will open up and release a red gemstone, which is a key for another hypothetical area of the game. My inspiration came from fantasy adventure games like The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, A Plague Tale: Innocence, and Skyrim. The eroded ruins, dreary lighting, and natural color scheme were chosen to give this level a somber mood, with the green flames providing an otherworldly element. Though it's a simple level, I'm proud of the end result for my skill level.
